Galvanized Chain Link vs. Vinyl Coated Chain Link

There are a few options when it comes to choosing a chain link fence for your yard but how do you know which fence is right for you and your home? Chain link fences are extremely popular due to their openness and affordability. Once you’ve decided that you want a chain link fence, though, it’s time to look at whether you would like a galvanized fence or a coated one.

The Fences

Galvanized fences are protected by a zinc coating to prevent rusting. Vinyl coated fences start out the same way as galvanized fences but are later coated with a vinyl cover which can be a color that matches your home or a unique one to add a little flair .

Durability

While most chains links last 15 to 20 years, vinyl coated fences tend to last longer than galvanized fences because of the extra coating. Chain link fences in general are known to be low maintenance anyway, but more so when either coating is added to prevent rusting..

Price

Typically galvanized fences are cheaper than vinyl coated fences but provide slightly less protection to the elements. If you live in an area where the sun doesn’t directly hit your fence, or it’s not likely that it will be pelted with rain or water consistently, you’ll fare well with a fence less coated.

Appearance

Galvanized fences are usually silver and typically rougher in appearance than vinyl coated fences. These are great for rustic homes or businesses where function is more key than fashion, although we love the look of a chain link around any property.  Like we mentioned, vinyl coated fences  can be colored and usually appear sleeker than their counterpart, simply because of the extra attention manufacturers spend on them.

Depending on your home’s needs, either fence could be the one for you. Whether you’re looking for a chain link in a specific color, one in the traditional silver, one that’s protected against the elements, or one that is budget friendly, we’ve got the fence for you.
