The Evolution of Fencing

old fences

Providing safety and security, fences can also deliver beauty and elegance to the exterior of your home. Fences are a landmark of suburban landscaping while making a statement of where private property begins and ends.

Over time, fences have changed to help improve  the way homes appear and are available in a wide range of styles and expressions to make the  property more secure while delivering an upgrade to your home’s value.

 Vinyl

The texture and making of vinyl fencing has changed drastically over the years. Initially, when the vinyl fences were first sold, they had a wood grain texture and a hollow center with posts made of PVC piping, making them light, but sturdy.

These days, vinyl fencing has become more popular and competitive as lifestyles have changed. You have the option of a simulated grain texture while the hollow center has been changed to steel reinforcement to make them stronger and more appealing.

Wood

Wooden fences look good and can create a solid barrier, offering plenty of privacy. They can help define the area of the property, giving the homeowner an easier way to hold private parties with an intimate landscaping. When wood fences first arrived, they were quite literally made of just wood. Without staining to keep mold and termites out, they fell apart within a few short years, needing to be replaced often.

You now have an option of pressure treated and chemically treated wood to prevent bugs from eating your fence and mold and mildew from growing and weakening your barrier. Wood fences are excellent choices for creating a boundary around your home and promoting privacy while creating a classic and homey look around your property.

Chain Link

Probably one of the more economical fences, chain link fences are simple and easily recognizable. They are typically used in metro and urban environments as they provide a full view of the yard while delivering a sense of security.

Upgraded chain links that we currently see are galvanized and double wired making it difficult to climb, hopefully dissuading vandals and burglars.

There are other type of fences that have managed to see a change throughout the course of time.

  • Timber Fence – One of the oldest and more popular types of fences has a versatility and a structure that is visually pleasing on either side of the fence.
  • Picket Fence – Seen as an American dream fence that provides a decorative appearance and is overall pleasant to look at, these tend to add class to a home.

As fences continue to change over time, they are built essentially for the same reasons. To enhance the look of any home while providing safety and security.
