Backyard Decks

Having a beautiful backyard deck adds appeal and value to you home, but can also add useful living space above and beyond a simple grill and table setup. There are many ways in which you can use your deck for ultimate fun and functionality. The sky is the limit and we’ve got a few ideas to get you started.

Gardening Space

Some people choose to use their deck spaces as portable farms, growing vegetables, fruits, herbs, and fragrant blooms to keep the yard green and fruitful during the warmer months. It’s fairly easy to grab some planting pots at your local home improvement store and plant some seedlings and watch them grow.

Pay careful attention, however, to your zone – your geographical area – as this will tell you when you should plant and what types of plants will grow best in your area.

Your Own Personal “Time Out” Space

Though most of us would love to have a chance to simply get away from it all, it’s just impractical. You can create your own getaway at home though, right on your backyard deck.

A comfortable lounger or hammock can give you the perfect place to curl up and read your favorite book or a great place to take an afternoon nap, and add a couple of tables for your glass of tea and some scented candles or oil warmers and you’ve got an easily accessible relaxation spot right in your back yard. Some strategically placed potted palms or other shade trees or shrubs can increase your privacy while only adding to the getaway feel.

Party Central

Taking your deck from the standard grill and patio furniture scenario is easier than you may think. Add a bar, some cool, comfortable furniture and some hookups for a television set or a stereo and you’ve got the ultimate game day oasis.

If you’re wishing you could use your deck space late into the cooler months, that’s pretty easy, too. A simple patio heater or even a portable fire pit will keep the chill at bay and enable you and your friends and family to cheer for your favorite team late into the season.

Hot Tubs

Many homeowners choose to partition off a part of their backyard decks for hot tubs. Having your own hot tub sure beats paying to use a public one and having it right off of the back of your house means that you can easily go from the hot tub to the house in the winter without too much of a chilly walk.

Just make sure that your deck can handle the weight of the hot tub and the water and have an electrician double check that your outdoor electrical outlets are up to par for your new acquisition and then, enjoy.

Extending Your Living Space

Installing sliding doors or even French doors can enable you to open up your indoor space and let it flow easily onto your deck, maximizing the living space you have available. This is a great way to eliminate crowding inside your home when you’re having parties or family get-togethers and allows for more space for your guests to break off for more intimate conversation.

There can be many ways in which you use your backyard deck and these are just a few of the great ideas that you can use to get started making your deck one of your most favorite areas of your home!
