The best kind of games are the ones that don’t need anything fancy– just creativity and good company. The backyard is the perfect place for such play, as it yields access to a large amount of space, totally free to use. Who needs a park when you could just use the natural beauty of your own backyard? Outdoor games are a great way to foster a love of the outdoors and exercise in children and have the added bonus of running their excess energy out of them. Here are a few backyard games that can be played even on the strictest of budgets:
Everyone’s It!
Everyone’s It! is a simple game that only requires a group of people (for best results, they should be about the same size) of about five or more people. To play, you indicate an area which is the “In” zone. If you happen to have objects handy, like traffic cones or stray sticks, you can place them in a square shape about thirty feet in every direction. This can be adjusted if you feel it’s necessary. The players place their non-dominant hand on the top of their head and keep it there. If they’re right-handed, they stick their left hand firmly on their head, for example. With their free hand, they seek out any unguarded elbows created by the angle of the non-dominant hand and tap it. Once an elbow has been tapped, that player is “out.” The last person standing is victorious!
Slap Wrestling
Don’t worry– you don’t actually slap people in this game. For this game, all you need are two contestants and a referee to moderate between the players in the case of questionable claims of victory or foul plays. The two competitors are asked to stand, facing each other, about a shoulder’s breadth apart. Their feet should be placed about level with their shoulders for the best results. The object of the game is to force your feet to remain completely still while using nothing but your hands to slap the opposing player’s hands in a manner that results in their moving their feet. Touching anywhere but the opponent’s hands is a foul play and results in a victory for the opposite player. It’s a good idea to get creative with how you push or pull the opposing player’s hands as they attempt to unsettle you in turn.
Whirl Tag
Whirl tag is a novel spin on the classic game of tag, where everyone involved in the game– including the “It” player– is asked to spin in place, standing up, while looking up at the sky, for a minute. Once a minute of spinning around passes, the game continues as a regular game of tag would, with the hilarious addition of everyone being incredibly dizzy. This is definitely a backyard game to play, as it requires lots of room to play in.
