How to Keep Mosquitos Out of Your Yard

Apart from transmitting serious diseases like malaria and exposing dogs to heartworm, mosquitos can ruin your outdoor activities. Therefore it is important to learn how you can keep them out of your home and away from your outdoor events.

Eliminate Standing Water

Mosquitos cannot reproduce without water because most of its life stages take place in water. It is advisable for you to empty water from any potential mosquito breeding grounds. Mosquitos can also breed in clogged gutters and this makes it important to ensure that gutters drain properly and that no water collects in them to make them a place for mosquitos to lay their eggs.

Trim Vegetation

Mosquitos also tend to inhabit tall vegetation. Tall grasses and shrubs provide a damp and cool environment for these bugs to settle. By trimming such vegetations their breeding places are destroyed which helps to reduce the mosquito population in your yard.

Mosquito Repellent Plants

Investing in some mosquito repellent plants or flowers for your yard is a good way to keep mosquitos out. These include lemon balm, rosemary, lavender, and citronella – although there are many more. Apart from keeping mosquitos away, these repellents are very attractive and they tend to make your outdoor area more attractive.

Bug Lights

Bug lights make your home less visible to most flying insects because they tend to attract fewer bugs as compared to other light bulbs. For example, a bulb with a yellow opaque coating is invisible to mosquitos. Because of this, they are not able to move towards the bulb because they can’t actually see the light.

Clear Debris Around Your Home

Debris that look similar to piles of leaves and branches are also potential breeding sites for mosquitos. A clean environment is a perfect way to reduce the mosquito population in your home. Clearing debris helps to minimize areas where mosquitos can lay their eggs.

Tent Your Courtyard

Tented courtyards help to prevent you from mosquito bites. With a tented courtyard, you wouldn’t need to spray mosquito repellents to keep them away. There are various types of tents that come with mosquito net additions. These are available in various colors, fabrics, and styles so that you have the ability to choose one that meets your preferences and taste as well as matching your exterior décor.

Use of Fans

If you are tired of using repellent creams and other bug sprays setting up outdoor fans can be a great alternative. Not only will they keep you cool, but these fans also dilute the carbon dioxide that you exhale while at the same time reducing your body heat. A reduction in your body heat minimizes your perspiration rate and since perspiration attracts bugs, fewer bugs are attracted.

Hire a Professional

Professional exterminators can be hired to check on areas like blocked gutters which can form breeding spots for mosquitos.  They also can provide effective ways to eliminate mosquitos and prevent them from multiplying around your home. Not only that but professional exterminators can use non-toxic treatments that cause no harm to people.

Making your yard free of mosquitoes is a cheap and easy process. Most of the methods used are natural and this means that no expensive equipment needs to be bought. With a mosquito free environment, you can relax and enjoy your outdoor activities any time you like.
