The White Picket Fence

White Vinyl Picket Fence

What speaks better of the American dream than a white picket fence? Since colonial days, the wooden picket fence has been a symbol of America. We picture it surrounding lovely houses of pastel blue, green, or white. It conjures up images of daffodils at Easter, or playing catch with the kids in June. You can almost smell the 4th of July barbecue wafting over the freshly mowed lawn.

The image of a vinyl picket fence brings us back to simpler times, when we weren’t so rushed, when sit-down family dinners prepared by mom were the norm, and neighbors could stop and have a chat on the sidewalk. There’s a certain innocence it brings to mind.

But the wooden or vinyl picket fence is not just for idyllic bygones. Even in these hectic days, it can grace a quiet corner lot or country retreat. Although it’s not the ultimate choice for security, a slatted fence is attractive, a perfect accent to a stately home and one that can serve a variety of purposes. Whether you’re looking to keep your children or pets in your yard, create a beautiful boundary around your home, or just add a little bit of elegance, a wooden or vinyl fencing can suit your needs perfectly while exuding the American dream feel.

To keep up the classy air with a little bit of flair, consider planting some irises or lilies to peak through the slats, or morning glories to trail all over. You could plant fragrant hydrangea to spill over the other side in snowy clusters. Honeysuckle’s white and orange blossoms attract bees and hummingbirds to your garden. Many of late summer’s beauties need the structure a picket fence provides so you can easily combine your gardening with your fence upkeep.

Within the yard, a fence could enclose a veggie garden or perennials, to protect your hard work from the rampages of dogs, kids, or vandals.

In addition, a vinyl fence could be an attractive boundary for an in ground pool area and a great way to keep your privacy and safely keep animals or kids out of the water. A fence like that can provide peace of mind as you enjoy the outdoors. As an added bonus, it can even match your poolside chairs or other patio decor to tie in all of your home’s aspects.

In our eyes, a picket fence, made of classic wood or modern vinyl, represents the finer things in life: summer, family, and apple pie. Add one to your yard and let it represent your roots. Enjoy years of backyard fun with your own picket fence.
