By Teresa Dixon In Choosing a Fence, Dog Kennels

A Fence For Your Big Dog

We’ve already talked about the best big dog for your family but once you’ve chosen your pup, there are a few other things to consider, like the fence that’s going to keep them in your yard. You’ll want one that keeps them from wandering off and away from the danger of roads. So how do you choose the best fence for your large breed dog? We’ve got a few tips to help you make the decision.

Height

One thing that big dogs have the advantage of over smaller ones is their height. Since they’re taller, they can usually jump higher and might even leap right over your fence. If your pet is a flight risk and will try to jump over a fence, make sure it’s tall enough to keep them in. Usually, this means about 8 feet tall panels in wood or vinyl.

Depth

They’re also likely to try to dig under the fence as well.  If your dog is a digger, make sure the fence posts are secured deep into the ground and your pup can’t crawl under. You might want to create a cement base for your whole fence line or just the posts, or consider other options like bushes or trees along the edge of your fence to keep your big dog from getting to it.

Style

This one depends on a mix of your needs and preferences. You might love the look of a vinyl or ornamental fence or be against a chain link. You might want something opaque like vinyl panels to keep your dog from seeing outside of your property and getting excited. There are so many style options that you can have the perfect fence for your taste AND needs.

In short, you’ll probably need a fence that’s tall and deep in the ground while providing enough coverage for privacy. We’ve got some great vinyl and wood options that would meet your needs perfectly and even dog kennels to make only a part of your yard your dog’s home.
