Why Should You Fence in Your Pool?

vinyl fence by pool

There are a number of reasons why most people choose to put fences around their pools. However, maybe you’re still trying to figure out whether putting up a fence is the right choice for you. Installing a pool is already expensive, and sometimes homeowners may wonder if adding a fence is a good investment. We think it’s a very good idea to fence in your pool as soon as possible, and here’s why.

Protecting Your Family

The number one reason to fence in your pool is this: an unfenced pool is a safety hazard. Children may be tempted to go swimming unsupervised. If there are children in your family, it’s extremely important to place a locking gate around your pool that the kids can’t access without an adult. Even if you don’t have children of your own, fencing in your pool is still an important safety feature, because kids who live nearby may be tempted to go swimming when you aren’t around. Your pets can also end up in your pool when you aren’t watching, and a fence will prevent that as well.

Protecting Your Privacy

Many families, especially those with small children, are uncomfortable going swimming when the whole neighborhood can watch. A fence allows you to protect your family’s privacy so that you don’t have to worry about an unwelcome audience. You’ll find that you can enjoy your time poolside a lot more when you can sunbathe uninterrupted.

Protecting Your Investment

While it may seem unlikely, there is a very real chance of wildlife finding its way into your pool. Animals that fall into pools often cause damage as they struggle to escape. This is especially true if you have a pool with a liner– cats, foxes, and other clawed animals can scratch it very easily, costing you a hefty repair bill. A fence also keeps out unwanted human guests who may be up to some mischief regarding your pool.

There is debate as to whether above-ground or in-ground pools have different fencing needs. It’s been argued that in-ground pools are more unsafe, as it is easier for children and animals to fall into them than it would be to climb a ladder into a taller pool. However, for all of the reasons listed above, we think that all pools should be fenced in, regardless of type.

It’s very important to protect your pool with a gated fence. Doing so will protect your family and your neighborhood from a number of hazards and make sure that you can enjoy your pool all season long.
