It’s something no one ever wants to think about; losing anyone to an accidental drowning. But the reality is that it sometimes happens. However, there are plenty of ways to prevent such a devastation from happening. Spend the month of May, National Drowning Prevention Month, to adapt and learn the best ways to stop an accident from happening in your swimming pool.
Just like with any type of safety, prevention starts at home. If you have a pool at home, you’re aware of the dangers and are sure to have taken measures already to keep your family safe.
Swimming Lessons
One of the best ways to prevent drowning is by making sure everyone in the family or those who will be around the pool can swim. Have the family take lessons together to make it fun or enroll the kids in a professional swimming camp at a local water park. Even if the whole crew can swim, continue to use the buddy system at the pool and have plenty of pool floats around.
Fence/Gate
Having a fence with a secure gate can prevent anyone from getting into the pool area that shouldn’t be there. Make sure the latch is childproof and the fence is tall enough that trespassers can’t climb over and invade your pool space. A fence also ensures privacy and security as you and your family lounge by the swimming pool on those hot summer days.
Supervision
Small children can get away from you very quickly. They’re fast and sneaky and you might not even notice they’re not around for several minutes. Even if the gate is closed and locked, some little ones can find their way into the backyard. Make sure you keep tabs on the kids and know that they’re nowhere near the swimming pool if they don’t need to be.
The best way to prevent any accidents from happening is to never let anyone near the pool alone. Even adults who know how to swim can have accidents so be sure to always have a friend with you while you’re out there.
