Getting a fence installed in your yard isn’t quite as simple as just setting up some panels. If it’s maximum stability and security you’re looking for, it all begins with the fence posts. This is especially true if you’re working with a chain link fence, because the posts will be fully responsible for supporting the entire weight of the fence. Those posts will have to be set in the ground— but how can you be sure that they’re secure?
The first step in making sure your fence is secure is digging post holes large and deep enough for the posts you’re setting up. Holes should be three times wider than the diameter of the post and one third of its length. You should also add four extra inches to the depth of the hole to include gravel (for added stability). If your holes are too shallow, the posts run the risk of falling over. If they aren’t wide enough, you’ll have to stop and re-dig before getting them in the ground.
The hole itself can only do so much to hold your posts in place, though. What if heavy rains or wind cause the posts to sway or come out of the holes entirely? This is simply not secure enough to provide you with the peace of mind that you need. You can make sure that your posts stay in place permanently, though, by adding a bit of concrete. After the posts have been placed in the holes and are level, pour an appropriate amount of concrete into each hole. You only need to fill it up to within two inches of the top, so be careful not to add too much– this can get messy and result in a more extensive cleanup job. After the concrete is poured, allow it to set for about two days before finishing the installation. Trying to move forward too quickly can cause your fence to collapse or shift while the concrete is still soft.
You may see some home or business owners whose chain link fencing is not set with concrete. While this is a cheaper option, it is also risky, as mentioned earlier– your fence is simply not ready to handle any kind of weather or stress.
