Nature’s bounty provides many wonderful opportunities for thrifty entertainment. Autumn, with its falling leaves and plethora of pumpkins, brings unique advantages to anyone seeking to connect with Mother Nature and have fun while doing it. Playing outside is an important part of staying healthy. The best part about it is that it’s totally free! You and your wallet will enjoy the benefits of breathing that fresh, autumnal air, and what it won’t cost your account balance. Here are a few games that don’t need much in the way of tools or other costly barriers to experiencing nature in all its bountiful joy.
Pumpkin Carving
You don’t need to buy anything more than a few pumpkin seeds if you don’t mind waiting ‘till next season, and to carve a pumpkin, all you really need is what you probably have on hand already. If you don’t already have a pumpkin, your local farmer’s market will likely have what you need cheaper than what you can get at a grocery store. A good kitchen knife will do the trick. There are a lot of cool things that can be done with pumpkin carving designs, from the typical toothy grin of a Jack O’lantern, to intricate scenes emblazoned by the candlelight’s warm glow. The internet is a good place to check for designs if you don’t want to make a new one, or you can enlist the aid of one of your art-minded friends. Pumpkin carving is fun for all ages!
Cloud-Gazing
Cloud-gazing is a fun imaginative exercise for any time of the year, but especially during the fall, where the spaces made by bare branches can create new designs in the clouds, or reveal patches of sky which otherwise might have been hidden beyond a thick layer of foliage. Cloud-gazing is really helpful for training your brain, and can aid in your ability to think “outside the box.” Sharing the shapes you make out of clouds with your family is especially fun. It’s a really nice feeling to relate your creativity to others. When you think about it, cloud-gazing is kind of like making constellations, except new constellations are always being made, and you don’t need to be in an area with low light pollution to enjoy it.
Tree-Climbing
With all those slippery leaves out of the way, Fall is the perfect time to get some exercise. Just be careful not to drop out of a high branch! “Fall” is just an expression, after all. Tree-climbing is a great (and cheap!) way to enjoy the thrill of climbing. No expensive rock walls or mountaineering gear needed! Just make sure to be careful and to stay within your comfort level when considering which branch to climb to. As an added bonus to tree-climbing, the view is incredible, and makes for a wonderful opportunity for some cloud-gazing while you’re at it!
