How Does a Security Fence Keep Your Home Safe?

Vinyl Fence

Your home needs to be a safe place for your family to flourish. Security is such an important and universal concern of all homeowners. It seems, in fact, that conversations about safety are always centered around the latest and greatest technology. From alarm systems to cameras you can access on your phone, the security industry is innovative and ever-changing, but despite impressive strides, one measure has remained constant: security fences. Of course, the use of fences to keep the bad people out (and the good people in) is certainly not a new phenomenon.  So, what exactly does a tried and true security gate do to protect your home? The short answer is “a lot.” A proper security fence can protect your property, but more importantly, the people who live there!

If nobody ever had ill intent, there would be no need for security to exist. In the real world though, many people do mean you and your family harm. By their very nature, criminals are unlikely to walk up to your front door via the sidewalk and knock. Instead, they scour your property for areas of weakness to exploit. Creating well-defined property lines can limit these perceived weaknesses.

As security fence should be at least 5-6 feet tall and any railings should be located on the inside of the fence to avoid step-ups. No matter how good your boundaries criminals can be overcome with ease if you leave things around your garden that can be used as steps-ups.  The most often used step-ups include trash containers, garden furniture, and step ladders.

Of course, common sense would suggest that even a modest fence around a backyard does have a role in preventing crime.  Just think about what a fence would do for you.  It will prevent or at least slow the progress of a thief trying to climb on to your property.  The thief might injure himself by climbing over the fence or make noise, which might be heard by a neighbor.  A fence would make it difficult to steal heavy or large items from your home like that new flat screen TV.

If the fence is topped with trellis and, perhaps a climbing, thorny shrub then the thief would probably not even bother at all. The only problem with using nature’s evolved defensive arsenal is that we must be a little patient for the results. But when these plants have reached maturity, they can present the most formidable barriers; however, the nice thing about it, of course, is that during the summer you will be rewarded with abundant, fragrant flowers.
