How To Maintain A Wooden Fence

Wooden fences add security, privacy and a visual appeal to any home.  From long and winding roads with a rail fence that goes on forever to a tiny bungalow home with an adorable picket fence, wooden fences are versatile and gorgeous.

Let’s look at how to keep them looking that way for many years to come.

Use A Protective Paint, Sealant Or Stain

Applying a protective coat of paint, sealant, or a stain will keep your wooden fence vibrant in color and keep it from being greatly affected by the ever changing, but always humid, Coastal Empire and Savannah weather.

Point Sprinklers Away From The Fence

When watering your plants try to keep the water away from your wooden fence. Sometimes there are chemicals in the water that are sprayed on your plants that won’t harm them but may harm your fence.  Plus, it’s always a good idea to avoid dumping rain on wood, no matter how perfectly you’ve sealed it.

Avoid Planting Anything Directly Against The Fence

Insects that live within the soil or on plants can cause a great deal of damage to your fence.  And, as already noted, moisture can damage wood, so keeping plants off of your fence allows it to get the breathing room it needs to prevent mold and fungus from causing damage.

Watch For Mildew And Fungus

Mildew and fungus can form on the fence when a lot of moisture accumulates on it. It’s easy to see though, so just give it some attention when you notice it.

When you spot signs of either, remove it immediately with a mildew/fungus remover. Concrobium Liquid Mildew Remover is a popular choice.

Pressure Wash The Fence When Needed

No matter how hard you try, debris will make its way onto your wooden fence. To maintain its original appearance, you should pressure wash the fence at least once a year and scrub any remaining dirt off.  It’s not a big job, but one that is necessary to keep your fence free of soil and icky growth.

Don’t skimp on maintenance. Regular fence maintenance can keep your wood fence in shape for many years.
