Your home is your castle. It’s the place where you feel the safest and enjoy sweet family time (as well as peaceful sleep). Shouldn’t you do everything you can to keep it protected?
Here are a few tips to get you started.
Security Fence
A strong and reliable security fence does a great job of keeping intruders away from your home. Although any fence could be used as a barrier, the most popular of the security fences are chain link fences, primarily because they are very affordable and quick to install. Chain link fences are affordable, easy to install, and easy to maintain. Having a security fences makes it harder for an intruder to get onto your property because it’s something they have to climb over or otherwise traverse to get to your door or windows.
Most intruders are in a hurry to get what they want and get away. A Security fence slows down that process (and sadly, probably moves them along to an easier target).
Motion Sensors
Motion detector lighting is an inexpensive way to protect your home. Having this at your home will alert you when there is motion outside of your home. It will also signal to intruders that someone is watching and knows they are there. Lights go on, burglars run away!
Larger Plants Can Be Helpful (or Troublesome)
Believe it or not plants can be used for home security purposes. If placed directly by your home, a thorny bush can keep intruders at bay. However, we need to mention that large bushes are also excellent hiding places. If you decide to use them, don’t put them too close to your home. They can create a nice ‘safe’ place for intruders to hide while they move in to attack.
Secure Windows
This may seem like a simple task but believe it or not most people don’t think about it. Be sure to put blinds and/or shades over your windows. Close them when you aren’t home and always at night. Doing this simple task can really protect your home because keeping prying eyes out of your private life makes the uncertainty of what’s in the home a deterrent. If they can see in, they can see when you are at your most vulnerable.
Secure Your Garage
Most people do not think about their garages when they consider securing their homes but, it’s very important to do make sure your garage is secure.
Keep your garage doors closed when you aren’t using the garage directly. Apps can help you remember this task. Connect your garage door openers to your phone and you can be alerted if you accidentally left your door open. You can use the same apps to close the doors anywhere there is an internet connection. (Liftmaster and Garageio are popular brands.)
Don’t leave devices that can open your garage door in your car. Many people leave their garage door openers in their visor, or even program their cars to open their garage. This is okay if you park in the garage always, but if you ever park in the street, including when you are away from home, you are leaving a programmed key to your garage (and often into your home) right there in your car.
Security Cameras
Although security cameras are nothing new, technology has improved so much that now you can view your home from your security camera through your phone or tablet. Popular apps like Nest, and apps from your security system provider, can make viewing your home, even while away, a breeze!
Keep your home safe by thinking like an intruder. Take the time to walk around your home after dark and put yourself in their shoes. What would deter you from breaking in? Make a list and start safeguarding your home this weekend!
