Winter, Wildlife and Fencing

The cold has an effect on the wildlife around us just as it does with us. There are a few unwanted animals that the proper fence can help keep out of your yard and home.

Rodents like mice will be searching out places to try and stay warm during the winter. Having a solid fence with no gaps is the best and only way to prevent them from getting into your house. Look for any potential cracks or breaks in your fence that you can sure up to make it harder hopefully impossible for them to get inside. These can also include squirrells who are hard to keep out as well and can just climb the fence, but a fence and trees trimmed around will make your yard slightly harder for them to enter into.

These rodents will try and burrow themselves into your home and will destroy your insulation and chew up wires and pipes.

The slightly larger animals are the ones fences really protect from. These are your raccoons and skunks. These will try and get into your trash for food and burrow and hide under your house or porch. They may bite or spray if threatened thinking their new burrowed spot is their home and not yours. Leaving you and your yard smelling foul! That’s why it’s best to have a solid fence to keep them out completely. Of course, these animals can burrow under fences if they really wanted to, so maybe consider putting a wire mesh from the bottom of your fence to prevent this from happening.

Thankfully, there are far less animals you have to worry about getting into your yard during the winter than there are in the summer, but a good fence will keep the critters out of your yard all year round!
