Construction: Do You Need Temporary or Permanent Fencing?

Temporary vs. Permanent Fencing for Construction Sites

Among the many legal regulation and requirements you must adhere to on constructions sites, you are also tasked with the safety of people and security of equipment. Some type of fence is essential for most construction sites to keep curious people out of potentially dangerous areas and deter theft or vandalism. Whether temporary or permanent fencing is the best choice for your site depends on a few factors.

Legal Requirements

There are regulations established by OSHA for perimeter fencing at construction sites. These regulations are primarily in place to protect the general public. Fences should be at least 6-feet high and locked any time construction personnel are not on site. There should be signs posted to warn people of possible dangers and the legal risks of trespassing.

In addition to OSHA standards, there are also local laws and county regulations that must be followed. State laws on construction site fencing vary from state to state, depending on the type of construction that is taking place. For most construction projects, high-quality temporary fencing that is properly installed should suffice. For some long-term projects, a permanent fence can provide an added layer of security and is the most cost-effective option.

Insurance Requirements

Construction site insurance not only covers employees who may suffer work-related injuries, but it can also protect you in the event of theft, vandalism, and damage caused by your equipment. The guidelines for fencing from the insurance company are typically more stringent than state or local regulations. It is worth it to invest money in a quality perimeter fence to obtain the most comprehensive insurance coverage at the best possible price. Commercial fence benefits far outway the money you might save with lower cost options.

Permanent or Temporary?

There are many different types of security fence. No one type is right for every site. Permanent fencing provides a level of stability beyond temporary fences and can be designed and constructed specifically according to the needs of your construction project. Features like automatic gates for large equipment, card or keypad access gates, and other features that allow monitored access can be included for optimal security. It all depends on the level of security you need and the type of activities taking place on your construction site.

Temporary fences are available in a wide variety of materials to fit your specific project. It typically comes in panels that can be moved and adjusted as the construction site changes. A temporary fence provides many of the same benefits as permanent fencing such as privacy screens and anti-climb design but at a lower price than permanent and semi-permanent fencing. When temporary fencing is properly installed by experienced professionals, it is highly stable and resistant to falling over, even in high winds or strong storms.

You have many experts working at your construction; most have highly specialized skills and experience.
