A Quick Guide to Repairing a Fence

repairing wood fence

You should know – before even considering fixing your fence – that the process will be different for different fence types. This guide should help you with common fence repair issues, but don’t fault me if something is missed along the way. After all, fence repair can be a pretty complex process, and some repairs definitely need a professional’s touch.

Now, let’s begin with…

Repairing Fence Rails

If a fence rail is rotted or broken, installing a T-brace can help. “T-brace” is a fancy name for sets of screws and wood that aren’t part of the original fence, but do provide extra support. They are often very simple to install. Find a place on a fence rail that isn’t held together well and nail in the supporting T-brace. It’s as simple as that.

If your issue extends to cover several fence rails then you might need to…

Repair the Fence Section

This repair is a little bit more demanding. It often requires picking up some wood from your local hardware store. A good source of (often) free wood are shipping businesses, as they almost always have used pallets they wouldn’t mind you using for your fence repair job. After you get some wood, you’ll have to assemble it into the size/shape of the rest of your fence rails. When constructing a fence section for repair always build it with excess length. If you have to cut some off later, so be it. It’s much more simple to cut wood than to make more wood appear.

Repairing Your Fence Posts

Repairing a fence post is the easiest of all three of these jobs. To fix a wobbly or broken fence post, you can quickly build supports. These supports could extend from the ground to the post or from the bottom rail of your fence to the post. Both support origins should provide extra structure to the fence post and prevent it from falling over.  Or, even better, just replace the post with a new one.

So – there you have it. Three ideas for solving common fence problems that you can do yourself. If you’d like to join our ranks of satisfied customers, give us a call or click on the red button below! We’d love to set you up with an affordable and beautiful fence.
