Repair or Replace: Vinyl Fencing Edition

Vinyl Fence 009

Many homeowners choose vinyl fences because they are low-maintenance and durable. However, vinyl fences will need to be repaired or replaced over time. If you need to know when to repair or replace your vinyl fence, here are tips on the best solution for different scenarios.

1. Stains and Yellowing

One of the most common problems with vinyl fencing is discoloration. The reasons your vinyl fences are discolored are either because of hard water or mildew. Rust-removal products can be used to get rid of hard water stains. For mildew stains, you can use a bleach and water solution.

However, if your vinyl fence has yellowing, this is because of the sun’s UV rays. Since this discoloration is surface deep, it is difficult to remove. Painting over the fence is a temporary solution you must repeat often. The cost-effective solution to this problem is to replace the vinyl fence.

2. Warping or Sagging

A warping or sagging fence needs to be dealt with immediately. Both of these conditions are caused by age or damage by extreme weather conditions.

Warping arises when the wood expands and contracts because of changes in humidity and temperature. As a result, the fence tends to twist and bend out of shape. Warping can be repaired if you fix it early. Otherwise, if the vinyl fence bends out of control, you must replace it.

On the other hand, sagging cannot be repaired. Sagging arises when the fence posts rot, or the rails break. Installing a new fence is the only way to fix this problem permanently.

3. Damaged Pickets and Panels

If a few pickets or panels in your vinyl fence are damaged, you can replace them. However, if your fence is a few years old, it may be difficult to find matching pieces.

Additionally, you should consider coloring when replacing panels. For example, if you are replacing the panels of a vinyl fence that is stained or yellowed, the new white pieces will stick out like a sore thumb against the old discolored fencing. In this case, it is better to replace the entire fence.

4. Misaligned Posts

Unlike panels, rails, or pickets, your fence’s posts form the foundation for the rest of the vinyl fence. Therefore, if they aren’t properly set, the only way to fix the problem is to pull out the old posts and set new ones.

For example, if you fail to align the posts correctly, you will need to replace them. However, if the existing panels, rails, or pickets are in good shape, you can reuse them when reinstalling new posts.

It is important to differentiate when to repair or replace your vinyl fence. Failing to make this distinction results in huge expenses due to repetitive maintenance tasks. It is advisable to consult a technician for direction on whether to repair or replace your vinyl fence.
