By Teresa Dixon In Choosing a Fence

3 Things to Consider When Getting a Fence

Congratulations on your decision to get a fence! We know you’re excited and looking at style options, material choices, and color picks. There may be a few things you haven’t considered yet when it comes to your fence, though. Let’s talk about what you might need to think about as you pick the perfect fence for your home.

Height

The height of your fence is determined by your needs. If you have an especially bouncy dog, you might want a taller one to avoid him jumping over it to escape. This is also a great choice if you live in an area where wildlife comes around often. You wouldn’t want a deer to be able to leap over your fence and eat from your garden. However, if you want a privacy fence that still allows you to peek over, consider a shorter one, especially if you’re not concerned about animals getting in and out.

Laws

If you live in a city, check out your local laws. Depending on your home’s proximity to a road, you may be prohibited from installing a fence within a certain space. You also might not be able to build it as tall as you would like. If you live in a suburb or gated community, your Homeowner’s Association may also prohibit certain fence installations or styles. Be sure to read up on the rules before investing in a fence you love but ultimately can’t keep.

Materials

There are a variety of materials that you can choose for your fence. You may have a personal preference but also consider things like weather, privacy, and stability. For example, wood fencing may not be the best if you live in an especially rainy/wet area, while chain link isn’t good for privacy. Consider your needs when it comes to having a fence and choose the best material for your fencing needs.
