How To Install A Wooden Fence

Wooden Fences are among the most popular fencing options in America. They have a long lifespan, visually appealing and quite affordable too. An added bonus is that they aren’t too difficult to install with proper guidance and preparation. Here’s a step-by-step guide to installing your first wooden fence.

Materials Needed:

  • post hole digger
  • hammer
  • stakes
  • level
  • nails
  • shovel
  • string line
  • fence panels or boards
  • fence posts
  • wood preservative
  • butt-joint

Step 1:

First, you need to decide how far you want the fencing posts spaced apart. Usually the fence posts are spaced between 6 and 8 feet apart. Set the corner posts first. To align the posts in between, stretch a line from each corner post. Be sure to mark each position exactly where you want the post hole dug.

Step 2:

When installing the fence posts, bury about 1/3 of each post into the ground. Use a post hole digger to dig the post holes. For the sections of posts that will be buried into the ground, use a wood preservative.

Step 3:

Shovel several scoops of gravel and place it at the bottom of each post hole before actually placing the post inside of the hole. Use a level to make sure the post will be properly placed. After the posts are correctly lined up, drive the posts down with stakes. After the posts are placed, fill in the holes with dirt and pack it down.

Step 4:

Place a bottom and top rail to attach to the fence posts. You will need to secure the rail to the body of the post. Use the butt-joint to complete this task. Make sure the top and bottom rails are properly lined up.

Step 5:

At a fence post corner, install the first board. Use a level to make sure it is aligned properly. After doing this, nail it in. Repeat this step at the other fence post corner. Place a string line to the top of both boards. Place a separate board against the first one, nail it in and repeat this step until all fence boards are in place. Be sure to stop along the way to make sure the boards are level.
