Questions to ask your Fence Company

Are you looking into purchasing a wood fence for your backyard? Whether you’re trying to keep your children safe, contain your pets, or just need some privacy, we’re sure you have some questions. To make sure you’re getting the best product for your needs, you need to ask your contractor a few questions. They are the experts, but they can’t read your mind. Here are a few important questions any homeowner should ask before deciding on a product or fence company.

“What concrete mixes for foundations does your company use?”

When installing a wood fence, a concrete foundation is needed to secure the fence and increase its longevity. You want your contractor to be using 100% premixed concrete. Some contractors mix their own, but if the mix isn’t consistent, the concrete usually won’t set right. This can result in fallen or loose corner posts, severely decreasing the lifetime of your fence.

“Are your post treated?”

Southern states create a hospitable environment for all sorts of insects. Most wooden posts should be treated for bugs, especially termites so you don’t end up with wood rot long before you expect it. Untreated materials may only last 5-7 years.

“What type of nails and how many do you use on backing rails?”

A proper wood fence will have 2 nails per backing rail. The backing rail is a horizontal piece (usually a 2”x4”) attached to the wood post and is the support of your fence. Ring shank nails are most common because they will grip the backing to the post. Smooth shank nails can come lose after some time has passed. If your fence is made of cedar, make sure that the contractor uses stainless steel nails because this wood has highly corrosive acids in the lumber that can make nails rust quickly.

“Who is responsible for clean up?”

Setting up a fence can leave mounds of dirt and debris in your yard. Usually, the contractor oversees making sure they leave your yard as beautiful as they found it but if you don’t ask, you may get some surprises later on.

These are not an exhaustive list and you’ll have a few of your own that are unique to your situation. Make sure you know exactly what’s happening with your fence and you’ll be even more pleased with the final product.
