By Teresa Dixon In Choosing a Fence

What is the Best Fence for an Uneven Yard?

Too many times, we talk to potential customers who know they want and need a fence but think because their property isn’t flat, it just won’t work. But nothing is impossible when you get your fence from us! Sure, it is more difficult and there is some skill involved in it, but Central Fence can absolutely provide you with a quality fence even if your yard is uneven.

While few yards come close to being perfectly flat, significantly sloped yards present specific challenges for homeowners who want a fence installed. Don’t let that discourage you! A challenge doesn’t make your fencing project impossible, especially when handled by our team of professionals.

There are, actually two ways to handle it. When building a fence on uneven terrain, one option is to follow the contours of your yard. This means that the horizontal rails of your fence will follow your yard in a smooth line that is parallel to the ground rather than level across the entire fence. Essentially, your fence gets higher as the ground gets higher. This method works best when the slope is slight rather than dramatic.

For a steeper slope or hill, following the contours of your land is more difficult. In this case, you probably want to opt for a stepped fence. This installation style is referred as “stepped” because each panel is a bit higher or lower than the next, creating the appearance of stair steps.

Stepped fences can be easily created with already-assembled panels, but the posts will need to be individually cut to fit the height of each panel. You’ll want each panel to be even and level, which means there may be gaps underneath the panels. Gaps can be a problem if the reason you got a fence in the first place is to prevent a pet from escaping.

In these cases, you will need to find a way to fill them. You may also want to fill your gaps for aesthetic purposes because you just don’t like the way it looks. One way to do this is by adding planters with pretty flowers and fresh-looking vegetation all along the fence. This not only covers the unsightly gaps, but allows you to add some bright color to your yard.

Don’t look at the slope of your property as a limitation, think of it as an opportunity to get creative in your yard design. Call us today at 1-800-221-6425 and let us know about your fencing needs, even if you think your yard is uneven. We can make it work! When you reach out to us, we will provide you with a free quote based on what type of fence you want, how large the area is, and what we need to do to install it. We serve Vidalia, Swainsboro, Claxton, Statesboro, Sandersville, and everywhere else in Southern Georgia.
